Purpose, product and commercial model
Inside API Credits.
Prepaid open-source model API access
API Credits is the flexible, pay-as-you-go sibling to FreeAPI. Builders top up a wallet, choose from a curated catalogue of open-source models and use one familiar API endpoint with transparent usage visibility. The product is aimed at testers, hobbyists, agents and budget-conscious teams that want spend control without another monthly commitment. It stays deliberately narrow: a wallet-first inference gateway rather than a hosted agent workspace, with a natural upgrade path into fixed-fee plans when usage becomes predictable.
Who the business serves
Hobbyists, early-stage builders, testers and teams with intermittent inference workloads are the target customers. They want to try models and control spend without committing to another monthly subscription. The strategic role is a flexible prepaid alternative to the fixed-fee Free API proposition.
Product and operating model
The intended product combines a curated open-source model catalogue with a compatible API endpoint, customer keys, wallet balance and transparent usage records. A customer funds a wallet, selects a suitable model and sees how calls affect the balance. The initial scope stays narrow around API provision and spend control, with clear onboarding and compatibility documentation.
Intended revenue streams
The commercial model below describes the intended ways this business can earn income. It does not represent verified sales, customers or recurring revenue.
- Prepaid wallet purchases
- Customers buy credit and spend it on metered API usage, generating repeat top-up income when the service becomes useful in their workflow.
- Repeat-use packages
- Curated budget access and clear usage reporting support continued funding without assuming a subscription commitment.
- Subscription upgrade path
- Mature users may move to a suitable fixed-fee service under an agreed cross-product arrangement.
Development intentions
The first priorities are successful funded calls, understandable metering and repeat wallet use. Model routing, cost discipline and service reliability should be demonstrated before widening the catalogue. Access to shared inference services and the commercial relationship with other portfolio products must be documented as part of handover.
